Just read this at the Onion's AV Club (it is an older article). Here's a quote that grabbed me:

[Wunderkind] began to wilt under the pressure. [S/He] spent years working on an utterly bizarre screenplay that seemed torn painfully from the innermost recesses of [her/his] soul. It was a futuristic sci-fi love story that doubled as a moody, arty meditation on love, loss, and a world that seemed to be spinning madly out of control.

What's most interesting to me is not that obvious "spot the director" quality of this quote (you get an extra cookie if you know who's being referred to without following the link). Rather, what I found fascinating was the list of three or four names that immediately leapt to mind, and I began to wonder: do all wunderkind directors share some deep-seated need to make such a film?

Hmm, interesting, especially as the frikkin' link won't open for me for some reason.

Is it Richard Kelly? It sounds like him.

That's very odd -- it works on my computer... 8)

And, no, it's not Richard Kelly. But it certainly could be, couldn't it? That was one of the names that immediately leapt into my mind.

"do all wunderkind directors share some deep-seated need to make such a film?" Yes, they do. In fact, most authors who harbor some kind of sense of resentment against the world for not having their genius duly recognized (as I did once, much to my detriment) probably also come up with at least one such book in their time. Oh, look at how our world is falling apart around us due to our own negligence and greed, but isn't it nice to know TWU WUV can still survive in such times? Yeah, yeah.
