Just read this at the Onion's AV Club (it is an older article). Here's a quote that grabbed me:

[Wunderkind] began to wilt under the pressure. [S/He] spent years working on an utterly bizarre screenplay that seemed torn painfully from the innermost recesses of [her/his] soul. It was a futuristic sci-fi love story that doubled as a moody, arty meditation on love, loss, and a world that seemed to be spinning madly out of control.

What's most interesting to me is not that obvious "spot the director" quality of this quote (you get an extra cookie if you know who's being referred to without following the link). Rather, what I found fascinating was the list of three or four names that immediately leapt to mind, and I began to wonder: do all wunderkind directors share some deep-seated need to make such a film?
