But that won't stop us from desperately stuffing the senate before the end of the year, before anyone can mount a non-confidence motion and remove our ability to engage our traditional privilege of fiddling the upper house.

::sigh:: This administration seems to always remain classy, neh?

If the Coalition brings down the government, there will still be more Liberal senators than Conservative ones, at least for now. It makes sense to me that Harper is seeking to restore balance to the Senate - Chretien undermined the upper House by appointing so many Liberals. There needs to be a better balance.

But the timing is definitely suspicious. And it worries me that Harper may stack the other seats that are about to come open and grandfather THEIR seats, as well, making any elected senate law a joke for its first several terms.

Yep, I'm aware that, if the Reformatories were playing the same game as the Grits, they have ground to make up. However, the irony of campaigning (and, one could argue, firmly building the party on the platform) on senate reform and then backing into same old, same old, is a little rich and yet another piece of evidence of Harper's fundamental political hypocrisy.
