Wow.
All the Toronto Raptors have done over the time that they've lost Bargnani to an appendectomy and Garbajosa to a nasty ankle injury is win three games in a row, beating the Heat, the Wizards, and the Bobcats. Tomorrow night, they go into Florida to face the Heat again.
If the playoffs started today, the Raptors would face the Heat in the first round, with home-court advantage. Given the spread in the current standings, I suspect that the Heat are the most likely candidates for the Raptors to face, but it's still too early to really tell.
But their last game against the Heat was handled masterfully. Tomorrow's game could be construed as a real test run for the Raptor's chances in the playoff.
To have lost two of the players that have proved so key to the Raptors' success this year, and to still make such an impressive showing in the three games since shows how deep the Raptors are this year and how many weapons they have. The Raptors are fun to watch when they play well (and horrible to watch when they play badly: the three they lost in the last ten were not at all pretty). I'll be excited to see how far they go in the playoffs this year, but I'll be even more excited to see what moves this team makes in the coming off-season to make this team better for next year.
Thank-you Bryan Colangelo. Please don't leave town.
[Ed. Well, just when you think the Raps are showing signs of getting over a hump, back they fall into mediocre "newly good" performances, losing to the Heat last night, and needing a rescueing (failed) last-second three just to tie. They played themselves back to that point from being 15 down, but you have to wonder why they found themselves back so far in the first place against the Wade-less Heat with Shaq only getting 16. That's a concerning sight for upcoming playoffs, but the Raptors are young and still learning how to win.]
