Apparently, Andrea Bargnani had surgery to remove his appendix this morning. It at least wasn't perforated, but I gotta believe that cutting your gut open to remove something from your abdominal cavity probably means that Andrea will be out for the rest of the season including the playoffs. This can't be good news for the Raptors who, while they had a strong January and February, have looked a bit softer in March and have gone .500 for their last ten.

Coupling this with the nicking up that's settling in on Calderon and Parker and things are not looking too rosy in Raptor-land.

I guess that means that Bargnani's hopes of Rookie Of The Year honours are pretty much dead too. Barring a strange happenstance, I suppose you can pretty much hand the award over to Brandon Roy now.

Too bad, really -- this is not how Raptor fans wanted to see their team in the stretch drive.

You know, my father had appendicitis *and* peritonitis, both of which he ignored until he couldn't move, and then it turned out his appendix was in the wrong place, complicating surgery.

He bullied his way out of KW Hospital and was back on his tractor within a week or two of giving in and letting us call the ambulence. He could do this even though "drive tractor" wasn't on the list of things he was supposed to do because he was a mechanical engineer and he had tenure.

By the way, you can't drive back to the hospital if all the stitches holding your insides in have popped. You will want both hands to contain matters. Make sure you line up a second driver.

You know, your family's medical history is something to marvel at. You should write a book, James. You really should...

If he's had keyhole (non-invasive surgery) this isn't as bad a problem.

If he had an open laparotomy to do the appendectomy, then it's a different story.

From the way Colangelo (the GM) was talking this morning, I suspect that it's the former. He was measuring recovery time in weeks, rather than months. Apparently (a) Bargnani is expected to get up and begin walking around tomorrow, and (b) he was pissed off last night when the TV in his hospital room conked out so Gheradini (GM's Assistant and Chief Bargnani Wrangler) was emailing him score updates on his BlackBerry!
