... I visited the FLCS, and had nothing to pick up, so after floundering there for a minute, I left and stopped by the Old Goat Bookstore on the way back to work. Probably in an effort to convince myself that I hadn't left the office and started my car's engine and burned some precious fossil fuels all for naught.

At the Old Goat, I had a brief conversation with Mr Mike, and then picked up a used copy of Cormac McCarthy's "All The Pretty Horses" which I've been picking up and putting down for months at various bookshops. So, my comic budget got spent on a modern American novel instead. Hrm.

I will almost certainly drop out "Storm Front" from my reading list, and insert this instead. I'm about 30 to 40% through "Storm Front" and I just can't really bring myself to care at all. I find the background a bit too bland, and the characterizations flat and not compelling. Maybe it's that I don't hook right in to this urban fantasy genre, so I'm just not predisposed to really be interested in it. I don't know what I was expecting, but I think [livejournal.com profile] thebitterguy was right in his prediction that I wouldn't like it.

As for the McCarthy, we shall see.

[Ed. - I have re-worded my brief comment about Jim Butcher's "Storm Front", because I thought it was mean-spirited and unfair. I still must say that I am not caring about the characters in the book: I find the characters too flat and without much interest. And I also do still think that the background is rather stock and uninspired. However, I will point out that (a) I'm still reading it despite the fact that it's in the position of "read a few pages on the loo in the morning" which is pretty much the lowest priority position on the current-reading queue, and (b) my revisions are thanks to [livejournal.com profile] drivingblind and his attitude towards criticism: that it should at least contain some practical analysis.]

I just assumed it would be too 'pop-y' for you.

If only I could call horse races that well.

I think you were right. As for picking horse races, maybe you just need to have the horses in your gaming group for a few months so you can pick up on their likes and dislikes... 8)
