It's a-live!
Nov. 4th, 2007 01:48Well, thank God, after hours of fiddling, I now have working Leopardy versions of all my current machines at home. The dual2 finally had to submit to an erase and install on the primary HDD, and by some freak of nature, that worked. Subsequent attempts to erase and install on the secondary HDD (after carefully taking care of all our data) were completely unsuccessful with all the errors I've been seeing over the past few days (damaged media, but not really, because it's kakking at a variety of points during the install process). This leads me to believe firmly that the optical drive, controller, or cable, in the dual2 is hosed and will probably need attention in the end.
At the moment, though, once I got a single HDD working, i was able to use Disk Utility to clone it's install over to the secondary HDD obviating the need for a DVD drive. Phew.
Then, I switched us over to using the secondary drive as our primary (because it's smaller), and turned the old primary drive into a TARDIS for use with Leopard's TimeMachine functionality.
There was a brief moment of cock-uppery as I forgot that for SYNC to work properly with user data, the same user must have the same UID and GID everywhere, and that I had forgotten that policy when I installed the OS on this computer. (Silly, because I have a standard technique for ensuring this; however, the recent slickness of archive and install caused me to forget how necessary this was in the past.)
Once that bit of stoopidity was corrected, a few SYNCs later brought down all my data without too much hassle.
Now I have to worry if the UID/GID shifting chicanery is going to cause a problem with TimeMachine. I hope not. I think the last thing I'll do before turning in is to deselect the TARDIS drive, erase it, and re-select it, to get everything started fresh with a proper backup. Let's hope the new primary HDD doesn't melt down before TimeMachine does it's initial sweep (knock very loudly on wood).
