David Gemmel apparently died this morning in his home, a week after having major heart surgery. I did not read Gemmel widely, but what I did read (the Drus books) I enjoyed. More and more the good reads of my youth are becoming more poignant... 8(

That sucks. I really liked his earlier stuff, but most of his recent works I either passed on or glossed over. Legend is still one of my favourite works of all time.

I own both of the "Lion Of Macedon" books, but I haven't read them. I notice that there's a new one just out in paperback as well called Soldier Of Troy or something? I thought about picking that up, but I didn't; don't know if I will now, as I don't necessarily want to get into a series that may not end.

I remember not being especially affected when Heinlein died. This probably had something to do with the fact that I was buried in index cards for a paper on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead at the time.

But, when Isaac Asimov died, I felt it. I told [livejournal.com profile] acrobatty that there was an Isaac Asimov-shaped hole in my world. I've still not read most of his best works, but he was a part of New York Fandom (read NYC Fandom), part of the extended fan family.

A lot of my Boston area friends had a similar reaction to Hal Clement's death. I knew him slightly, and had only read a non-fiction essay he'd written about sf, but I knew enough to know that he was their Asimov.
