Over the weekend, I finished this first of three linked books by Cormac McCarthy. Normally, this is not my kind of thing. However, after reading the first 50 pages, I picked up the second and third books in the sequence ("The Crossing" and "Cities On The Plain"), as well as his most recent "The Road".
There's something about McCarthy's writing that just sucks you in and keeps you turning the pages. The writing is deceptively plainly adorned and flowing, partly thanks to his syntactic style and partly thanks to his direct approach.
The only creative work that I can remember experiencing that comes close this book is Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven", and there are a fair amount of similarities between the two, in tone and presentation, if not in character or plot.
Highly recommended.
