Don't look now, but the notion of Canada as a federal union may well be passé. How long before these guys field federal candidates to "more properly represent the unique interests of Saskatchewaners as a nation within a nation"?

Parties like that are a fine old Canadian tradition: the Nova Scotians formed one within minutes of Confederation back in 1867. Almost every province save for Ontario has had one and we had a *regional* party up north that wanted to chop Northern Ontario off from the southern bit.

Oh, God, cutting us loose of the drain on provincial resources that is the north! What a wonderous world that would be.

I mean, seriously, what's the income for fees on lumber these days?

Well, except that creating a new province requires amending the constitution. I guess we could tack New Ontario (as the north used to be called) onto Manitoba or make it into a territory.

We'd still end up sending money there via transfer payments.

I'm sure my father, his rural pals, and all their firearms would be only too happy to meet with you to congratulate you on your choice of name... 8)
