Apparently Zooloretto has won this year's Spiel des Jahres, so congratulations to Michael Schacht. I quite like Schacht's games, but I don't actually own Zooloretto (it will have to now get added to my shopping cart... another game purchase... ::sigh::).
I have to this point only tried two of the five nominees this year: Arkadia and Yspahan. I enjoy Yspahan very much; it deserves bonus points for being a "natural game for three players" as well as being good with four. Arkadia was good, but still seemed a bit dry (typical of my experience with Rudiger Dorn's games: good, but dry).
If Zooloretto turns out to be as much fun as Yspahan, then it will turn out to be money well spent. And I suspect that it will make Abacus quite happy: the game already has several expansions and nothing satisfies a publisher quite as much as expansions for a prize-winning game; in the past it has proven pretty much a license to print money (such as it is in this hobby).
