So our red-Liberal incumbent, who pretty much everyone I know swears is a "decent guy" and who has 10 years of federal political experience, was defeated last night by a (apparently socially conservative) CON candidate with next to no political experience, and who (according to CBC's bio of him) lists nearly all of his relevant experience as being religious in nature (formed this church, member of that church organization, participated in this Christian mission in those third-world countries).

If the Greens hadn't run a candidate in our riding, then perhaps some of those votes might have gone to the incumbent, and not all to the NDP candidate (who finished a distant third).

How long will it take before someone starts making noise about "uniting the Left" in this country? How long will it take before Harper's amalgam of Social Conservatives (like our guy), Fiscal Conservatives, and a few dangling Red Tories, shakes itself apart ideologically? I hope the latter comes before the former, because I'm not sure I want to live in a two party state as do our fabulous friends south of the border...
