Well, it was an adaptation of a 1973 novel; to me there's a distinction between adaptations (re-presentation of a narrative in a different medium) and remakes (re-presentation of a narrative in the same medium). This distinction may not be tremendously useful.

I'm not aware of any prior adaptation of Godey's (Freedgood) novel before the 1974 film...
